Research scope
The dissertation examines Soviet–Japanese economic relations from the restoration of post-war trade contacts through the early 1980s. It focuses on:
- the restoration and development of bilateral trade after the Second World War;
- coastal trade and regional economic cooperation;
- Soviet–Japanese scientific and technical relations;
- fisheries diplomacy and the 1956 fisheries convention;
- the consequences of 200-mile economic zones in the 1970s;
- the interaction between political constraints, state institutions, business interests, and regional economic needs.
Sources and archival work
The research is based on diplomatic, economic, statistical, institutional, and personal sources. Archival work included material from the Archive of Foreign Policy of the Russian Federation (AVPRF), including Japan-related files, and the Russian State Archive of the Economy (RGAE).
The study also makes extensive use of Soviet and Japanese statistical collections, trade documentation, institutional records, periodicals, memoirs, and published source collections.
